The Evening Sun Evening Primrose is a darling perennial that has a petite form but makes a significant visual impact. The botanical name is Oenothera missouriensis, and the low-lying plant blooms from spring through summer. The sunny yellow flowers have a delicate appearance and stand out against the thin, silvery-green foliage. The plant is named because the flowers open in the afternoon or evening and remain open overnight to support butterflies and moths. The flowers fade in the morning only to be replaced by new blooms the following evening.
Feature evening primrose near the front of a bed so the dainty flowers are visible. Butterflies enjoy the fragrant flowers, but deer and rabbits usually leave the plant alone. The Evening Sun Evening Primrose is low maintenance and grows in zones 5 through 9.
Evening Sun Evening Primrose Care
Evening Sun Evening Primrose can happily live in any type of soil, but it prefers a moist, well-drained site. Plant this cultivar in full sun. This plant has low water needs and is drought tolerant at maturity, but water it during a dry spell for best performance. Fertilize monthly during the growing season.
This plant quickly spreads to fill empty spaces, but feel free to pull any wayward plants or thin the growth if it becomes too dense.
Evening Sun Evening Primrose Spacing
Evening Sun Evening Primrose has a diminutive form and only reaches 3 to 6 inches tall but spreads 15 to 18 inches wide. Space this vigorous grower 17 to 19 inches apart and allow new growth to fill in the gaps.
