Evercolor Everillo Carex lights up shade with cascading lime-to-gold foliage that stays colorful all year. This compact evergreen sedge forms a soft mound 12 to 18 inches tall and wide, making it easy to repeat along paths, in containers, or through woodland beds. Carex oshimensis 'Everillo' begins bright lime green and matures to golden yellow, with shade giving the foliage a cooler chartreuse tone. Our landscape designers reach for it when a shaded container needs bold foliage color.

This EverColor selection was developed from the well-known Japanese sedge line and is noted for its vigorous growth within the series. It has a clumping habit, fine arching leaves, and inconspicuous brown spring flowers that are secondary to the foliage. Evercolor Everillo Carex is evergreen in many climates and perfectly suited to winter containers, shaded borders, groundcover plantings, and path edging. It is also deer resistant and well suited to moist shaded sites, provided the soil drains freely.

Evercolor Everillo Carex Care

Plant Evercolor Everillo Carex in part shade to shade, with bright shade bringing out the best golden color in warm regions. Morning sun is acceptable in cooler climates, while harsh afternoon sun can scorch the foliage. Grow it in moist, well-drained soil with an acidic to neutral pH and ample organic matter.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help the clump establish. After that, keep the soil evenly moist, allowing brief dry periods but avoiding bone-dry soil and standing water. Fertilize once in spring with a gentle slow-release fertilizer, since sedges can react poorly to overfeeding. A thin mulch layer helps hold moisture and keeps soil from splashing into the crown.

Evercolor Everillo Carex needs little pruning beyond spring cleanup. Gently rake out old blades or trim lightly just before new growth appears, taking care not to cut too deeply into the crown. If winter leaves look worn, refresh the clump in early spring and give it good airflow to reduce fungal issues.

Evercolor Everillo Carex Spacing

Space Evercolor Everillo Carex 12 to 18 inches apart for edging, groundcover, or mass planting. For containers, use a pot at least 12 to 14 inches wide with drainage holes and a moisture-retentive potting mix that still drains well. Window boxes and mixed shade planters should be checked often in summer, since smaller soil volumes dry faster.

For companion planting, plant Evercolor Everillo Carex with hostas, astilbe, ferns, and coral bells in shaded beds, and let foliage color and leaf shape do most of the design work. Hellebore and lungwort make useful cool-season partners, adding flowers before the sedge reaches its brightest summer color. In containers, begonias, fuchsia, impatiens, or wishbone flowers can share the same protected light and regular moisture.
