Featherman™ Chastetree (Vitex × ‘V14-9-1’) offers a refined, upright form with finely textured, narrow green foliage that gives it a soft, feathery appearance. In summer, slender spikes of pale purple flowers rise above the foliage and draw bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Mature plants reach about 3 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, making this a compact alternative to traditional vitex trees. In our southern trial beds, we’ve been impressed by its steady flowering and strong structure through heat.
This deciduous shrub descends from species native to the Mediterranean region and western Asia, long valued for toughness in hot climates. It forms a dense, upright mound that works well as a low hedge, vertical accent, or structural element in mixed borders. Deer mostly leave it alone, and established plants tolerate heat and dry conditions with ease. Because it is sterile, it produces little to no seed in the garden. Use it in cottage-style plantings, pollinator gardens, foundation beds, or large patio containers where its airy foliage contrasts nicely with broader-leaved shrubs and ornamental grasses.
Featherman™ Chastetree Care
Plant in full sun, with at least six hours of direct light daily, for best flowering and strong growth. Featherman™ vitex adapts to a range of soil types, including sandy or clay soils, as long as drainage is good. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH is ideal, but it is not highly sensitive to soil conditions. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots; once established, it performs well with average to low moisture. Apply a balanced granular fertilizer for flowering shrubs in early spring if growth appears weak, especially in cooler parts of its hardiness range.
Because it blooms on new wood, prune in early spring before growth resumes. In colder zones, it may die back to the ground and can be treated like a perennial; cut stems to a few inches above the crown in early spring. In warmer climates, thin or trim to shape as needed. Avoid heavy pruning in late summer or fall, which can stimulate tender growth before winter.
Featherman™ Chastetree Spacing
Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart when planting as a hedge or in mass to allow the upright form to develop fully. For a looser border planting, allow at least 3 feet between shrubs. Choose a container at least 18 to 24 inches wide for one plant, using a well-drained potting mix. Underplant with prostrate rosemary or silver dichondra to echo its heat tolerance, and add upright accents like fountain grass (Pennisetum) for movement and contrast.
