Growing Zones
Fringed Loosestrife features delicate, 5-petal, bumblebee-yellow florets, lightly brushed with crimson at their centers, and lanceolate, shamrock-green foliage. This herbaceous perennial blooms in summer and fall and is a great option for landscape areas prone to boggy conditions. Whether used as ground cover or planted in containers, Fringed Loosestrife adds color and texture to landscapes, decks, and patios. Also known as Lysimachia ciliata, syn. Lysimachia longipedicellata, syn. Steironema ciliatum, and syn. Steironema pumilum, this wildflower grows to a maximum height of 12 to 48 inches and spread of 12 to 24 inches. Bred by American Beauties Native Plants, this versatile, fast-growing plant is cold hardy in zones 4 to 8 and attracts pollinators including native bees.
This North American native grows naturally along streams/ponds and in wet fields, and is able to tolerate periods of standing water. Growing upright with a mounding habit, Fringed Loosestrife has a tendency to spread. Because this wildflower is both deer and rabbit resistant, critters do not typically pose a problem. Relatively disease resistant and low maintenance too, Fringed Loosestrife is particularly perfect for busy people wanting to accent damper areas of their yard with color and texture.
Fringed Loosestrife Care
For best results, plant Fringed Loosestrife in partial shade to shade in loamy, moist, slightly acidic, well-draining soil. To improve the soil texture, fertility and drainage, you can mix some quality compost into your soil. The soil’s pH should be no greater than 6.8. Possessing moderate water needs, ensure this wildflower gets at least an inch of water per week. This wildflower does not normally need fertilizer; however, if your soil is nutrient deficient, apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) in late winter / early spring.
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage repeat flowering. Trim dead, diseased, and/or damaged stems and foliage. After the first heavy frost, cut back the foliage to a few inches above ground level to prevent damage from the oncoming winter weather.
Fringed Loosestrife Spacing
Plant Fringed Loosestrife along ponds/streams, in low-lying wet areas, in rain/water gardens, or in containers. If growing en masse, space plants 24 inches apart. If growing in containers in a thriller-spiller-filler combination, this wildflower serves best as a thriller. Plant it alongside other companion plants such as bee balm, phlox, lavender, and yarrow.
