The dramatic foliage of the Frydek Alocasia is this plant’s most striking feature. The arrowhead-shaped leaves are a deep velvet green with striking white veins and burgundy backsides. The Frydek Alocasia is a cultivar of the species Alocasia micholitziana and is also known as the green velvet alocasia or Frydek elephant ear. Although the Frydek Alocasia may have a reputation as challenging to care for, it grows quickly when conditions are ideal.
Best Locations For Growing Frydek Alocasia
The Frydek Alocasia makes a suitable addition as a floor plant to nearly any room in the house, provided there is bright indirect light and temperatures above 60 degrees. Avoid drafty areas like near windows or by heating vents. During warm summer weather, the Frydek is an excellent container plant to accent a shaded outdoor area like a patio. Alocasias like the Frydek are toxic, so use them cautiously around pets and children.
Frydek Alocasia Sunlight Requirements
The Frydek Alocasia needs bright indirect light to thrive. A native to subtropical forest floors, alocasias developed large leaves to make the most of dappled shade conditions; direct sunlight can burn the foliage.
Frydek Alocasia Care
Choose a loose, nutrient-rich potting soil that offers good drainage for the Frydek Alocasia. Prune off any leaves that turn yellow or die back by snipping them at the base of the leaf stem. Keep humidity levels high around this plant or occasionally wipe down the leaves with a damp rag to discourage spider mites, as Alocasias are a favorite of these pests.
Watering Frydek Alocasia
Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Water the Frydek Alocasia whenever the top two inches of the soil in the pot feel dry to the touch. This plant prefers high humidity levels, so regularly mist the plant when conditions are dry or use a pebble tray with water under the plant to keep it in peak health.
Feeding Frydek Alocasia
Encourage vigorous new growth by fertilizing the Frydek Alocasia monthly when the plant is actively growing. A complete water-soluble fertilizer intended for houseplants is an excellent option.
