Growing Zones
The Grape Galaxy™ Hens and Chicks is not very large, but it is showy. Silvery-gray leaves have dark purplish-burgundy margins and grow in a rosette. The colors are more vibrant in cool weather, although this adaptable plant can thrive in various climates. The Sempervivum Chick Charms® 'Grape Galaxy™' features a parent plant, or hen, that produces offsets or chicks. With time and proper care, a healthy hen will have abundant chicks.
Hens and Chicks make an excellent groundcover in rock gardens and landscapes. Use the Grape Galaxy™ Hens and Chicks to add bold color to a mixed planting or window box. As a hardy, low-maintenance succulent, this plant is suitable for inexperienced or forgetful gardeners. Grow the Grape Galaxy™ as a perennial in zones 3 through 8.
Grape Galaxy™ Hens and Chicks Care
The Grape Galaxy™ Hens and Chicks thrive in full sun and sandy soil that dries out quickly. It tolerates partial shade as well. Avoid planting it in overly rich soil, which can cause leggy growth. Water it only when the soil is completely dry. Fertilizing is not mandatory but can be helpful when plants are grown in low-quality soil.
The ‘hen’ naturally declines after flowering and producing offsets. Remove the parent plant when it turns brown and crispy. Move container-grown Grape Galaxy™ Hens and Chicks to a protected area in the winter out of the elements. Landscape plants do not need additional winter care.
Grape Galaxy™ Hens and Chicks Spacing
The Grape Galaxy™ Hens and Chicks reaches 2 to 3 inches tall and 4 to 6 inches wide. Space plants 4 to 6 inches apart for a dense planting. Grow one Sempervivum in an 8-inch wide container.
