This Groundbreaker® selection is part of a new low-growing panicle hydrangea series bred to spread more than it rises. It is an excellent choice for edging, foundation fronts, pollinator beds, and compact garden spaces that need cool-toned summer color. The naturally broad mound also fits patio pots and decorative planters. This shrub reaches about 16 inches tall and 32 inches wide at maturity and grows in USDA Hardiness Zones 5-8.
Groundbreaker® Greeny™ Hydrangea Care
Plant Groundbreaker® Greeny™ Hydrangea in full sun to partial shade, giving it bright light for the heaviest bloom coverage. It grows best in fertile, moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, though panicle hydrangeas adapt well across a broad pH range.
Soak the root zone thoroughly at planting. Continue to check soil moisture often while new roots spread into the bed. During hot or rainless weather, irrigate when the upper few inches of soil begin to dry, paying close attention to pots and window boxes. Feed in early spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer as new growth begins, and avoid feeding late in the season. Mulch around the plant to reduce soil temperature swings and help protect the shallow root area.
Prune Groundbreaker® Greeny™ Hydrangea in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. For the densest growth, cut stems back to about 8 inches above the soil. Remove spent flowers after bloom for a tidier container or edging display, or leave dried panicles in place for fall texture.
Groundbreaker® Greeny™ Hydrangea Spacing
Space Groundbreaker® Greeny™ Hydrangea 28 to 32 inches apart on center for a connected flowering groundcover effect. In mixed borders, allow about 32 to 36 inches between plants so the low branches can spread naturally around neighboring perennials. For containers, choose a pot or window box at least 16 inches wide with drainage holes and a rich, well-drained potting mix.
Combine Groundbreaker® Greeny™ Hydrangea with allium and Russian sage so upright flower forms rise above the low green-to-white hydrangea panicles. Little bluestem can add fine texture and fits the same open, well-drained setting. In containers, bacopa or fan flower can trail along the rim while the hydrangea fills the center with long-lasting summer bloom.
