Groundbreaker Hydrangea
Beautiful Blooms That Cover More Ground
Groundbreaker® hydrangeas are remarkably versatile. Use them as flowering ground cover across larger spaces, plant them along garden beds and walkways, or grow them in a container on your patio, porch, or balcony.
Create a Carpet of Hydrangea Flowers
Groundbreaker® hydrangeas make their biggest impact when planted together. Use several plants to create a flowering ground cover, define the edge of a garden bed, or fill a larger landscape area with color.
Space 20–24 Inches Apart
For a continuous ground-cover effect, space plants approximately 20 to 24 inches apart, center to center. This gives each plant room to spread while allowing neighboring plants to grow together into a full display.
Plan for 1 Plant per 3 Sq. Ft.
As an easy planning guide, use approximately one plant for every 3 square feet. A 3-by-6-foot area will generally need about six plants, while a 4-by-8-foot area will need approximately 10 to 12 plants.
Plant in Even Numbers
Group Groundbreaker® hydrangeas in even quantities such as 2, 4, 6, or 8 plants for a clean, balanced, and more modern landscape design. Use pairs to frame a walkway or patio, groups of four for a compact planting, or six or more plants to create a fuller border or flowering ground cover.
For the fullest look: Arrange plants in staggered rows instead of a strict grid. This helps the plants blend together more naturally and creates the appearance of a continuous carpet of blooms.
How to Encourage Healthy Groundbreaker® Growth
Proper pruning encourages vigorous new growth and helps Groundbreaker® hydrangeas develop a strong, full, and well-branched shape.
When to Prune
Prune in early spring, before the plant begins actively growing and the buds fully open. Depending on your climate, this is typically between February and April.
How to Prune
Cut all stems back evenly to approximately 8 inches above the soil. This encourages fresh growth and helps create a fuller, more stable plant.
