Groundbreaker® Ruby Hydrangea is a low-growing panicle hydrangea with a spreading habit that brings long-lasting color to the landscape. Large white flower panicles begin blooming in midsummer before gradually changing through shades of pink to a rich ruby red as the season progresses. The blooms can last up to 100 days, providing reliable color from summer into fall.
Unlike traditional upright panicle hydrangeas, Groundbreaker Ruby naturally grows wider than it does tall, making it an excellent choice for borders, mass plantings, slopes, and the front of landscape beds. Its dense branching and compact growth also make it well suited for decorative containers. This shrub reaches about 16 inches tall and 28 inches wide at maturity and grows in USDA Hardiness Zones 5-8.
Groundbreaker® Ruby Hydrangea Care
Plant Groundbreaker Ruby Hydrangea in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly while plants become established and during extended dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant flowering.
Groundbreaker Ruby blooms on new wood, so pruning can be done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Little pruning is typically needed beyond removing spent flowers or lightly shaping the plant, making it an easy-care shrub for landscapes and containers.
Groundbreaker® Ruby Hydrangea Spacing
Groundbreaker Ruby Hydrangea reaches approximately 16 inches tall and 28 inches wide at maturity. Space plants about 24 to 30 inches apart on center to allow them to spread into a continuous flowering groundcover.
