How do you picture Hawaiian Spider Plant? Maybe you envision its slim, elongated leaves mirroring an arachnid’s legs as they grow tall and then curve downward as a spider? Or perhaps you see its variegated foliage, painted with segments of cream and chartreuse, as a cluster of multicolored satin ribbons fluttering in the wind? Either way, this tropical perennial is unique and attractive. This lovely evergreen originates from Africa, and is also known as Chlorophytum comosum, Spider Plant 'Hawaiian', Spider Ivy, Spider Plant, Ribbon Plant, and Airplane Plant. It looks great planted in a hanging pot with its plantlets draped about, and yields small but splendid ivory blooms. With all these traits, this lovely house plant will offer color and charm to any home or office for years to come.
Best Locations For Growing Hawaiian Spider Plant
Hawaiian Spider Plant thrives in bright indirect light, temperatures ranging between 70-90°F, and humidity levels ranging between 40% to 80%. And? Since this lovely house plant is nontoxic to people and pets, you won’t have to worry about little hands or paws coming into contact with this hybrid.
Hawaiian Spider Plant Sunlight Requirements
Hawaiian Spider Plant prefers bright, indirect light. Any room with south-facing, west-facing or east-facing windows will suffice; however, during any periods of direct light, it is wise to place this lovely house plant a few feet away from any windows to prevent its leaves from being sunburned.
Hawaiian Spider Plant Care
A 4-inch or 6-inch pot is a good-sized starter home for your Hawaiian Spider Plant. It prefers aerated, well-draining soil with a neutral pH. To promote growth and avert fungal disease, use a good houseplant potting soil amended with peat moss and perlite/coco coir.
While Hawaiian Spider Plant does not require frequent pruning, dead leaves should be trimmed in order to promote growth and prevent disease. To promote bushier growth, remove the offsets. This will enable the plant to use more of its resources for growth versus reproduction.
This slow-growing hybrid will normally need to be repotted only every two to three years, preferably at the beginning of the growing season in spring. Simply repot your Hawaiian Spider Plant in a pot that is one to two inches bigger than the old pot. Also, if you love your Hawaiian Spider Plant so much that you want it to multiply, you can propagate this hybrid using offsets or seeds.
Watering Hawaiian Spider Plant
Hawaiian Spider Plant only requires watering when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil are dry to the touch. During the growing season, you will typically need to water this hybrid once or twice each week but less frequently during the dormant period of fall and winter.
Feeding Hawaiian Spider Plant
Feed your Hawaiian Spider Plant a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer biweekly except during this plant’s dormant period, or winter months. Watch, however, for leaves that are turning brown. This may be an indication of over-fertilizing. Fertilize sparingly to avoid chemically damaging this plant’s foliage.
