Hicks Yew is a showy evergreen that boasts glossy dark green needles with a lighter green underside. This dense shrub adds year-round color and visual interest to an outdoor space. Hicks Yew is also known as Taxus media Hicksii and has a narrow, columnar habit. This plant is a slow grower but, with time, can reach 10 to 15 feet tall. Female shrubs produce pinkish-red seed-bearing cones.

Use Hicks Yew as a specimen or a screen to give a backyard space some privacy. This evergreen shrub makes a wonderful hedge to frame in a yard to conceal a foundation wall or trim this shrub to create a topiary. This plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8. Rabbits do not favor the needles, so this plant will likely retain its foliage in areas plagued by nuisance animals.

Hicks Yew Care

Hicks Yew is a very adaptable plant that can comfortably live in a variety of conditions. Plant in full sun to full shade. This plant has average water needs and will require consistent water during its first year. The shrub is drought-tolerant once it has acclimated. Soil should be neutral, sandy, or loamy and allow good drainage.

Hicks Yew does not require regular pruning and can be allowed to maintain a natural form, or the plant can be trimmed and shaped to maintain the desired look. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in the spring or top dress the soil with organic compost to encourage a strong root system and more growth.

Hicks Yew Spacing

Hicks Yew is an evergreen shrub with an upright columnar growth habit. This shrub will reach 10 to 15 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. Space plants 4 to 5 feet apart to create a dense hedge or leave more room if you intend to use the plant as a focal point or a topiary.
