Hollywood Hibiscus™ Earth Angel™ Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'JBG AH-09') captivates with white petals and yellow stamens from late spring through early fall. It grows to about 4 feet tall, offering a graceful presence in sunlit beds or patios. Repeated flower cycles extend the showy display during warm temperatures. Many enthusiasts prefer it over standard varieties due to its subtle yet unmistakable color transitions.
Its compact growth habit suits borders or mixed plantings, and it rarely becomes fussy about minor drought conditions. This tropical shrub, originally from warmer regions, remains mostly free of major pest issues. It can function as a permanent fixture in frost-free climates or an annual in zones with colder winters. We find it works best for hedging, container displays, and accent plantings, where its decorative foliage and enduring blooms steal the show.
Hollywood Hibiscus™ Earth Angel™ Tropical Hibiscus Care
Position it in a spot receiving six or more hours of direct sun and use soil that drains promptly, enriched with compost if needed. A slightly acidic to neutral pH promotes healthy growth and continuous bud formation. Provide regular water during high heat, and feed every two to four weeks with a balanced fertilizer. In northern zones, plan to grow it as a container plant and relocate indoors when temperatures drop.
Pruning can be minimal if you clip off old flowers and tidy any leggy stems. Pinch back new growth to encourage branching or remove damaged branches at any time to maintain appearance. In colder regions, overwinter it in a bright room or heated greenhouse, watering sparingly to avoid root rot. Containers should be filled with a quality potting mix and may need upgrading every couple of years to accommodate root expansion.
Hollywood Hibiscus™ Earth Angel™ Tropical Hibiscus Spacing
Place these shrubs 48 inches apart when lining a walkway or forming a decorative row. Tighter spacing of around 40 inches can create a dense hedge effect, though additional trimming may be required. For a patio feature, select a container at least 18 inches across to provide ample room for root growth.
