Hollywood Hibiscus™ Hot Shot™ Tropical Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis '14-0704-02') energizes patios and gardens with its intense red flowers. This variety grows around three to four feet in height, delivering a stunning display over an extended blooming season. We’ve observed that its blooms open reliably through warmer weather, offering steady color in sunny beds and containers. This hibiscus showcases a bolder hue than many other tropical types, creating a strong focal point wherever planted.
Hot Shot's evergreen foliage retains a lush appearance in frost-free climates. Pollinators appreciate its large, open blooms, and deer generally avoid nibbling on the durable leaves. It thrives in full sun and holds up well in humid conditions when given adequate care. Try it in mass plantings for a standout hedge, add it to mixed borders for dramatic contrast, or feature it in a patio container where guests can enjoy its showy flowers.
Hollywood Hibiscus™ Hot Shot™ Tropical Hibiscus Care
Plant this hibiscus in well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, and enrich heavier ground if needed. Full sun encourages the most abundant flowering, though a bit of afternoon shade may benefit plants in extremely hot regions. Water thoroughly but let the top layer of soil dry between sessions, especially if growing the shrub in heavier soil. Feed once or twice a month with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season to sustain regular blooms.
Remove any damaged or crowded branches after the primary bloom cycle, which also helps maintain a tidy shape. In colder areas, we suggest overwintering potted specimens in a warm, protected spot. A layer of mulch around the base moderates soil temperatures and conserves moisture in mild climates. Containers should have good drainage and a high-quality potting mix that supports healthy growth through the colder season.
Hollywood Hibiscus™ Hot Shot™ Tropical Hibiscus Spacing
Allow at least four feet between individual shrubs in the garden to encourage proper growth and branching. Closer spacing may be used when creating a more compact hedge, but be prepared to trim regularly. A new planting in a container needs at least a 16-inch pot, and larger sizes can be used as the plant matures.
