Tillandsia Houston Red Princess, also called an Air Plant, has iridescent silvery-purple foliage and produces a vibrant dark-pink and lilac inflorescence. Requiring little more maintenance than weekly misting or dunking in water, this epiphytic plant is perfect for a terrarium or attached to driftwood, making it a unique and pet-safe addition to your plant collection. Air plants do not need to be planted into soil. Instead, they absorb moisture in the air through their leaves.
Best Locations For Growing Houston Red Princess Air Plant
Air plants naturally grow beneath the canopy of tropical trees, protected from harsh direct sunlight and receiving plenty of humidity. Place the Houston Red Princess in a spot that receives bright, indirect light, and provide it with regular humidity for best results. Because they do not need to be planted, you can get creative with how to display air plants. Add Houston Red Princess to a glass terrarium in your kitchen or bathroom, or perhaps place it on a shelf with your favorite books and geodes.
Houston Red Princess Air Plant Sunlight Requirements
Houston Red Princess will do best in indirect bright light, protected from direct sunlight but in a bright enough spot to grow and bloom.
Houston Red Princess Air Plant Care
Houston Red Princess requires little maintenance. Once the pink and purple bloom has faded, it can be trimmed off. The plant will now focus on creating “pups” at its base, which can eventually be removed to become their own plants, blooming in a couple years time. Old lower leaves can be easily removed when they have dried up.
Watering Houston Red Princess Air Plant
Because air plants thrive in humid conditions, it is a good idea to mist them every couple of days, especially in drier months. Even with misting, you will want to dunk your Houston Red Princess in water once a week for 20 minutes to one hour, ensuring that water is soaking into their unique silvery leaves, which turn bright green when freshly watered. Once watered, be sure to shake your air plants dry before returning them to any holder, terrarium, etc.
Feeding Houston Red Princess Air Plant
Air plants are epiphytic bromeliads. For this reason, they will appreciate Tillandsia- or Bromeliad-specific liquid fertilizer that is low in nitrogen, or liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to one-quarter of the recommended strength. While fertilizing is not necessary, you can add fertilizer into your soaking or misting water once a month during the spring and summer months.
