Ice Dance is a variegated form of Japanese Sedge that performs fabulously in shaft parts of your garden. The light green leaf has a creamy white edging that seems to glow in dark spots and when planted next to contrasting leaf shapes and colors. Try planting Ice Dance as a border in an Asian inspired garden underneath darker leaved Rhododendrons or Azaleas.
Japanese Sedge is Also called Hinoki grass. The blades of grass are flat, wide and arching and make a lovely swishing sound in the slightest breeze. Cottage Gardens, Zen gardens and Modern architectural garden plans are good places to use Ice Dance Variegated Japanese Sedge. This grass has 4 seasons of interest. The foliage is semi-evergreen and lasts most of the winter before dying back completely to the ground. Extremely deer resistant.
Ice Dance Variegated Japanese Sedge Care
Japanese Sedge is adaptable to many different garden sites. Full shade will help the variegation stay bright, but some shade either early in the day or late in the afternoon is also acceptable. Soil texture on the light side is preferable and will help Ice Dance spread when planted as a ground cover. Water requirements are average. Well drained soil is important for the winter. Waterlogged, cold soils will encourage root rot and kill this grass.
Fertilizing Ice Dance Japanese Sedge is not regularly needed. If this grass starts to slow down its growth habit, dividing is a better way of rejuvenating the growth. Dividing on a 3 year schedule will help keep growth vigorous and healthy. Although this Sedge grows quickly in clumps, it is not invasive and very easy to keep under control.
Ice Dance Variegated Japanese Sedge Spacing
Ice Dance Variegated Japanese Sedge stays fairly compact and has a lovely weeping. A mature height and width of 12-16 inches makes this plant perfect for an edging plant or adding drama to a deck or patio planted in pots. Spacing the plants at 12 inches on center is recommended.
