Enjoy the beautiful blooms of a beautybush but with a more compact growth habit when you bring the Jolene Jolene Beautybush into your space. This shrub, which also goes by Kolkwitzia amabilis, has star-shaped pink flowers with a bright yellow throat. Starting in early summer, delicate flowers cover the gently arching branches. Inbetween flowers, each branch is also dotted with small, bright green foliage.
This vigorously growing plant is part of the Honeysuckle family and can be used as hedges, foundation plantings, or specimen plantings. Beautybush plants are very adaptable and low maintenance. The striking blooms will give pollinators a reason to visit your space, but this deciduous shrub is deer-resistant, so it is not likely to fall victim to hungry deer. This beautybush is cold-hardy and grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Jolene Jolene™ Beautybush Care
The Jolene Jolene Beautybush needs full to part sun to thrive and maximize flower production. Soil should be alkaline and well-draining. This plant has medium water needs, and newly planted shrubs require regular watering. Once established, beautybush plants typically only need watering during a drought or extended dry spell.
Fertilize this shrub using a balanced plant food in the fall after the leaves have dropped or in the spring before the buds emerge. Thin out the branches after the flowers fade away. Beautybush shrubs bloom on old growth, so prune the oldest stems or limbs at the end of the bloom cycle. This practice will ensure plentiful blooms during the next growing season and maintain a neat appearance.
Jolene Jolene™ Beautybush Spacing
The Jolene Jolene Beautybush has a much more compact size than other varieties. This cultivar will grow 3 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. Plant this beautybush 5 to 6 feet apart from other shrubs to provide a continuous mass planting or hedge. This shrub should be planted at least 8 feet from a building.
