Feature
One of the most striking flowering Hoyas, Hoya australis ‘Lisa’ features beautiful variegated foliage in shades of green, cream, and pink. The large leaves look stunning year-round, but the real highlight is the highly scented cream-colored flowers that often rebloom in clusters. This older variety, discovered in Australia, has been highly sought after since its introduction. As an epiphytic succulent, it requires little maintenance and minimal encouragement to bloom.
Best Locations for Growing Lisa Hoya
Hoyas thrive when allowed to grow up a trellis or spill out of hanging baskets, showcasing their extensive trailing abilities. Hanging baskets are a popular choice for growing Hoyas, but they can also be planted in pots and allowed to trail over the sides of shelves or bookcases. Hoyas are non-toxic to pets and children, making them a great addition to decorate bedrooms.
Lisa Hoya Sunlight Requirements
Hoyas prefer bright sunlight indoors, especially if you want to encourage blooming. A spot near an east or west-facing window with bright indirect light is ideal, as it will protect the variegation of Lisa from fading. In rooms with south-facing windows, position your Hoya off to the side or across the room to shield it from the brightest part of the day. Broad-spectrum grow lights used for 12 hours a day are an excellent alternative for offices or rooms that lack sufficient natural light.
Lisa Hoya Care
Hoyas require a growing medium that promotes excellent drainage and allows oxygen exchange. For the perfect blend, mix orchid bark with all-purpose potting mix in a 1:1 ratio.
Flowering is more likely to occur as the days shorten in the fall. After the flowers fade, avoid deadheading the entire stem; instead, allow the peduncles to remain, as they will eventually produce more buds.
Watering Lisa Hoya
Allow the potting mix to dry between waterings, which is typically once a week, depending on the humidity levels available to the plant. After blooming ends in the fall, reduce watering to once every 10-14 days. Overwatering is easy to do with epiphytic plants and often leads to root and stem rot.
Feeding Lisa Hoya
Apply a fertilizer formulated for blooming houseplants like orchids or African Violets. Feed once a month at half the manufacturer's recommended dosage from March to August.
