Growing Zones
The Live Oak Tree, or Quercus virginiana, is a majestic tree with an impressive form. Large, sweeping branches stretch horizontally from the trunk and dip down before growing upward. Oblong, glossy foliage is dark green on top and light grayish-green on the underside. This tree is almost evergreen and retains its foliage for most of the year. New leaves grow in the spring almost as soon as the old leaves drop. New foliage comes in alongside inconspicuous flowers. The flowers give way to acorns by fall. Acorns serve as a food source for various birds and small animals. Mature Live Oaks stand 50 feet tall and 80 feet wide on average, although, with enough time and proper care, Live Oaks can span 150 feet across. These are fast-growing trees, although growth does slow with age.
These trees are native to the Southeastern U.S. and do well with little care once they have settled in. Part of what makes these trees so easy to grow is their adaptability. Live Oaks can grow in various conditions and are generally undemanding. These trees can even tolerate salty soils, which allows them to grow well in coastal areas. Live Oak Trees are well loved in the South and commonly used as an ornamental or focal point in a landscape.
Live Oak Tree Care
Live Oak Trees grow in part shade to full sun. These trees are adaptable and not particular about soil quality but expect the best results when grown in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Water trees weekly for the first growing season. Established trees are drought tolerant but appreciate water during an extended dry period. Support growth by applying a slow-release fertilizer each spring.
Remove dead or damaged branches at any time. Remove crossed or vertical branches when pruning, and time trims to late fall or winter when the tree is dormant. Young trees benefit from an annual trim as needed. Mature trees only need pruning every few years.
Live Oak Tree Spacing
Live Oak Trees are sizable, so select a planting location clear of overhead obstructions. Plant Live Oaks 20 feet away from buildings and paved areas, like roads or driveways. Leave 50 feet between a Live Oak and other trees.
