Growing Zones
This fig produces a large crop of attractive yellow-skinned figs with sweet amber to light red flesh. The fruits are initially light green and turn yellow as they ripen from late July to early September. A single tree can produce 10 to 15 pounds of tasty figs.
Plant this tree to create a focal point in your garden or as part of a home orchard. It also makes a good container plant especially if you want to grow figs in a colder climate and have a warm place to store the container over the winter. Ficus carica L.'LSU Gold' will reach between 8 and 15 feet in height at maturity but can be pruned to a smaller size for easier harvest or to conserve garden space. LSU Gold Fig was introduced by the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station fig breeding program.
LSU Gold Fig Care
Figs trees are generally pest and disease-free. Cover your tree with netting if birds are stealing or damaging the fruit. LSU Gold Fig can be grown in USDA plant hardiness zones 8 to 10 in full to partial sun conditions. Expect your tree to reach between 8 to 15 feet tall with a spread of 8 to 10 feet when fully grown. This tree is self-fertile and will typically begin to bear fruit the first year it’s planted.
LSU Gold Fig Spacing
Space multiple trees 8 to 10 feet apart, center on center. This allows enough room for the trees to have enough air circulation and sunlight. And it also allows you enough room to walk around the tree and harvest the fruit.
