Lucifer Is the signal that summer is coming to a close. Lucifer Crocosmia, or Montbretia as it is also known, is a late summer bloomer that has intense orange-red blooms and lovely sword shaped sword that resembles Iris. The green foliage grows all summer only to produce an arched bloom stem just as the rest of the summer perennials are calling it quits.
Lucifer Crocosmia is actually a corm that readily multiplies when it is planted in the right spot. The dense foliage works as a backdrop for summer bloomers like Coneflower, Daylily and ornamental Grasses. Lucifer can be used in Rain Gardens, Cottage Gardens, Cut Flower Gardens or container gardening.
Lucifer Crocosmia Care
Surprise! Dry, sunny and hot suits Lucifer absolutely. Well drained soil is a must so that Crocosmia corms do not rot over the winter if you live in a wet area of the hardiness zones. Extra irrigation during the summer is sometimes needed to keep Lucifer standing upright. Strong staking when growth is small is also recommended. The mature plant can get quite heavy to lift if staking is needed.
Fertilizing should be done early in the spring when the pointy leaf tips emerge. A well balanced, slow release food that encourages blooming will last all year. Pruning is not needed for this perennial. letting the seed heads and leaves stay on the plant for the winter provides food and shelter for birds and other small animals.
Lucifer Crocosmia Spacing
Perennials can be planted much closer together than shrubs or trees. Lucifer matures to a height and width of 24 inches. Placing the plants at 18 inches on center will allow them to grow close enough together so that they can support each other when in bloom.
