Growing Zones
Slender naturally arching foliage give the Maiden Miscanthus a fountain-like appearance. This low-maintenance ornamental grass can grow rather large, so it will be right at home in the back of a bed or a large empty area. Also known as Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus,' this plant sends up silvery-white flowers starting in the fall. This plant is clump-forming, so it maintains a full, mounded look.
Maiden Miscanthus grass makes a fantastic accent or specimen planting. Create a small grouping to make a statement or feature this grass in borders or landscapes. This fast-growing grass is drought and heat tolerant, so it can thrive during summertime conditions. Maiden Miscanthus is not a favorite of deer, so you can be confident this plant will last if you live in an area with nuisance deer. This ornamental grass attracts birds and grows as a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 9.
Maiden Miscanthus Grass Plant Care
Maiden Miscanthus can handle diverse conditions, but to help this plant flourish, select an area that receives full sun. This grass has medium water needs, so water when the top few inches of the soil dries out. Maiden Miscanthus prefers moist soil that promotes good drainage. The soil should also be acidic to mildly alkaline and have a 5.5 to 7.5 pH.
Remove spent blooms and damaged growth as it appears, but otherwise, this plant does not require pruning. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in the spring before new growth emerges.
Maiden Miscanthus Grass Plant Spacing
Thanks to its size, this ornamental grass makes a statement, and a mature Maiden Miscanthus will be 5 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart center to center to create a seamless mass planting. If you want to create a more spread-out look, plant this grass 5.5 to 6 feet apart.
