This plant is a continuous bloomer with each flower only lasting about one day. The flowers have purple filaments that cover broad, flat, lavender petals. The fragrant flowers produce a fruit, known as maypops, that can be eaten from the vine or used in jams and jellies. The flowers are offset by dark green, deeply lobed foliage.
Grow the Maypop Purple Passionflower in beds or borders. This climbing vine needs support, so give it a trellis, arbor, fence, or something it can hold on to. The unique flowers attract butterflies, and birds enjoy the fruit. This tropical-looking vine is a perennial in zones 5 through 9.
