The lovely and unique flowers of the Maypop Purple Passionflower are sure to leave an impression. Also known as Passiflora incarnata, this vining perennial blooms from mid-summer until early fall. This plant is a continuous bloomer with each flower only lasting about one day. The flowers have purple filaments that cover broad, flat, lavender petals. The fragrant flowers produce a fruit, known as maypops, that can be eaten from the vine or used in jams and jellies. The flowers are offset by dark green, deeply lobed foliage.

Grow the Maypop Purple Passionflower in beds or borders. This climbing vine needs support, so give it a trellis, arbor, fence, or something it can hold on to. The unique flowers attract butterflies, and birds enjoy the fruit. This tropical-looking vine is a perennial in zones 5 through 9.

Maypop Purple Passionflower Care

This vining plant is a fast grower and requires full to partial sun. Morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal  Plant Maypop Purple in moist, well-drained soil that is neutral to acidic in pH. Soil with high organic content supports this plant's growth. Water this plant once or twice per week or whenever the top few inches of soil are dry. Passionflower plants are heavy feeders, so in addition to planting in rich soil, feed this plant every 6 to 8 weeks starting in the spring using a balanced fertilizer.

Passionflower plants bloom on new wood, so prune the plant in the early spring to remove old, woody growth. Pruning old growth will encourage new growth, creating a more full look and encouraging more flowers.

Maypop Purple Passionflower Spacing
