The fast-growing Mini Monstera or Dwarf Monstera as it is often known is not actually a Monstera, but a type of aroid plant botanically called Rhaphidophora tetrasperma. With a climbing vine-type habit, this Mini Monstera can be trained up a moss pole or left to trail down over a shelf. With green glossy foliage and deeply cut edges, it really does look like the Swiss cheese plant.
Best Locations For Growing Mini Monstera
The Mini Monstera will grow anywhere it receives enough light and warmth. However, being toxic, care must be taken when growing this plant around children or pets.
Mini Monstera Sunlight Requirements
This plant prefers bright, indirect light, but can tolerate some shade. However, avoid placing it where it will receive strong, direct sunlight, such as near a south-facing window, as this can scorch the foliage.
Mini Monstera Care
The Mini Monstera thrives when grown at a temperature of 68°F to 80°F. Preferring average humidity levels, this aroid will not tolerate dry air and may need misting regularly if grown in a dry environment. To keep to size or to encourage bushy growth, the growing tips can be cut off above a node, using a pair of sanitized and sharp scissors. Damaged or dying leaves can be removed by cutting at the base of the stem.
Watering Mini Monstera
The Mini Monstera prefers moist soil during the growing season. Watering once a week is generally enough, although it is advisable to allow the top inch or two of soil to dry out before watering again. In winter, watering can be reduced. When watering, make sure any excess water has drained away before placing the plant back in its decorative pot.
Feeding Mini Monstera
To promote vigorous growth, the Mini Monstera can be fed monthly during the growing season with a balanced houseplant fertilizer as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
