Mirroring a happy-go-lucky octopus suspended in the azure shallows, Octopus Agave, or Agave vilmoriniana, is a drought-tolerant ornamental plant that has elongated, narrow evergreen leaves resembling an octopus’s tentacles. Originating from Mexico, this slow-growing succulent possesses benign spines that mark the tips of its verdant leaves. Its low maintenance and minimal watering needs make this lovely house plant the perfect option for any newbie gardener with minimal free time to spare.
Best Locations For Growing Octopus Agave
Octopus Agave requires bright to medium, indirect light; temperatures ranging from 73°F - 83°F during the day and 68°F - 72°F, in the evenings; and moderate humidity. Keep in mind that Octopus Agave is toxic to both people and pets.
Octopus Agave Sunlight Requirements
Octopus Agave prefers bright to medium indirect light. Position this plant in a south-facing, west-facing or east-facing window. If you notice sunburn on this succulent's "tentacles", make sure to set the plant a few feet away from any intense direct light.
Octopus Agave Care
Octopus Agave thrives in bright indirect light, average to high temperatures, and moderate humidity. It prefers loamy, acidic, and well-draining soil. An ideal pH range to aim for is 5.5 to 6.5. Use a good houseplant potting soil mixed 1:1 with peat moss, along with sand, pumice, perlite, or coco coir for drainage. Octopus Agave does not require frequent repotting. If you would like more versions of Octopus Agave to add to your plant collection, propagation can be done by using stems and offsets.
Watering Octopus Agave
This drought-tolerant perennial does not require frequent watering after it is established. Water this agave when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Typically, this means watering about twice a month.
Feeding Octopus Agave
Once established, feed your Octopus Agave a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month during this plant’s growing season, in the spring and summer months. Dilute the formula to 50% of the manufacturer’s recommended strength.
