Pineapple Paradise™ Hens and Chicks is a gorgeous, juicy, irresistible plant that is also fully winter hardy in the majority of the United States. Sempervivum Chicks Charms® ‘Pineapple Paradise’ is also known by the name Hot Summer and has bright yellow leaves tipped in a tropical punch red. This is one stunning plant to grow in a pot or at the edge of a garden bed.
Pineapple Paradise is cold hardy and highly tolerant of heat and humidity. Grow Sempervivum in rock gardens, on the edge of sunny garden beds, and in containers for decorating decks and patios. Hens and Chicks make fantastic tabletop decor, giving your table a tropical yet minimalist feel. Virtually free of pests and diseases, Hens and Chicks can be planted and forgotten about and are perfect for gardeners who are short on time or energy.
Pineapple Paradise™ Hens and Chicks Care
Hens and Chicks are drought tolerant and require well-draining soil to perform well. Sandy to loamy soil is perfect, while heavy clay soil will need amending with compost to improve the drainage ability. Choose a planting location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sun for the most vibrant color production. Fertilize lightly once a season with a granular or liquid formula for succulents and cacti.
Hens and Chicks spread by side shoots known as chicks. These offshoots can be left attached to the mother (hen), or can be separated when they reach 1 inch or larger and replanted. The roots are very shallow and prefer to grow in a shallow container like a saucer or specialty succulent bowl.
If desired, bring Hens and Chicks indoors to grow as a houseplant over the winter. As long as they receive bright direct sunlight, they will thrive indoors. Reduce watering and stop fertilizing over the winter when the plants are semi-dormant.
Pineapple Paradise™ Hens and Chicks Spacing
The full size of Pineapple Paradise™ is a small but mighty 2-3 inches tall with a 12-inch spread. Space plants 12 inches apart when planting a ground cover in the garden. Choose a pot with excellent bottom drainage and at least an 8-inch diameter.
