The Pink Quill Bromeliad (Willisea cyanea)  is an epiphytic Bromeliad, boasting an inflorescence of electric pink bracts emerging from the center rosette of slender, silvery-green leaves. The long-lasting bloom of the Pink Quill Bromeliad adds a shock of color to the average houseplant collection. This quirky plant can be kept in a pot or attached to driftwood as a conversation piece. Though Bromeliads will only bloom once, their ability to produce “pups” allows plant lovers to keep generations of the same plant.

Best Locations For Growing Pink Quill Bromeliad

The Pink Quill Bromeliad adapts to different lighting levels, keeping its color the best in indirect bright to medium light. Place this plant in a bright bedroom to add a splash of color or place in a bathroom for the added benefit that the humidity provides. Like other epiphytic Bromeliads, Pink Quill is unique in that it can either be kept in a pot with an airy potting mix or displayed more creatively. The Pink Quill Bromeliad can be removed from its potting media and attached to driftwood or nestled into a terrarium. This Bromeliad is a non-toxic plant, making them an excellent addition to homes with pets and children.

Pink Quill Bromeliad Sunlight Requirements

The leaves of the Pink Quill can be burned by direct afternoon light. For this reason, avoid placing it directly in front of south- or west-facing windows. The less intense light of a north- or east-facing window is ideal. When Bromeliads are in low light, their blooms may fade more quickly than those in brighter light.

Pink Quill Bromeliad Care

Because Pink Quill Bromeliads are epiphytic and therefore do not need to be in soil, they should not need to be repotted. If a new pot is chosen, it should be about the same size as its current pot, with adequate drainage. Be sure to use an airy, bromeliad-specific potting mix, or use equal parts peat moss, orchid bark, and perlite. Once the pink inflorescence fades, the Bromeliad will put its energy into creating “pups”, so continue to provide the mother plant with water and light. These pups can eventually be removed from the mother plant and potted on their own to bloom in 1-3 years.

Watering Pink Quill Bromeliad

The frequency of watering for a Pink Quill Bromeliad will depend on the plant’s location, how much light it gets, humidity, and temperature. While the potting media can be kept relatively moist, the Pink Quill Bromeliad will benefit more from regular misting, as their specialized leaves absorb water better than the roots. Because Bromeliads are sensitive to salts, use rainwater or distilled water if possible, or leave a pitcher of water out for at least 24 hours prior to spraying the Pink Quill’s leaves. In warm or dry conditions, mist the Pink Quill Bromeliad weekly; less misting is needed when temperatures are lower and when it is more humid.

Feeding Pink Quill Bromeliad

Fertilizing the Pink Quill Bromeliad may not be necessary. If fertilizing is desired, use a Tillandsia (Air Plant) or Bromeliad fertilizer to spray the leaves of the Pink Quill Bromeliad once a month in the spring and summer, when the plant is actively growing.
