The Pink Spike Bugbane is a large, colorful plant that will turn heads when featured in a landscape. Also known as Actaea simplex 'Pink Spike' (Cimicifuga), the tall flower spikes of this perennial reach several feet tall and boast fragrant, light pink flowers. The flowers first appear as dark pink buds and bloom during late summer. The lovely blooms are complemented by fern-like deep purple foliage.
Bugbane is a stunning perennial that can be used as a specimen in a landscape or to add texture and contrast to a mixed planting. Create a border or an attractive mass planting with this herbaceous perennial. The tall, wispy flower spikes add height while providing a subtle texture. The Pink Spike Bugbane grows in zones 4 through 8. The flowers draw pollinators, particularly butterflies, but the plant is deer and rabbit resistant.
Pink Spike Bugbane Care
Plant Pink Spike near tall trees or a building that will block sunlight and strong winds because this plant thrives in full to partial shade with protection from wind. It requires well-draining but moist soil and prefers a high organic content. Plants in rich soil do not need fertilizer but plants in low-quality soil should be fed a balanced plant food annually each spring. Water this plant regularly before the soil dries out.
Remove dead or damaged growth as needed. Deadhead Bugbane to keep the plant looking tidy, and cut back all growth to ground level in the fall.
Pink Spike Bugbane Spacing
Mature Pink Spike Bugbane plants stand 2 to 4 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide. Space plants 2 feet apart so they have room to grow while creating a dense planting.
