Porcupine Grass has a tall, columnar structure and spiky foliage that will make a big statement in a small space. The mostly upright leaves grow in a rosette formation and will gently bend under their weight. The green blades of grass have spaced, sunny yellow bands that add an unexpected pop of color. Miscanthus sinensis Strictus is a striking ornamental grass blooming in the early fall for additional visual interest.
Feature Porcupine Grass in beds, mass plantings, or borders. This ornamental grass's tall narrow structure makes it a good fit for areas tight on space, like near entryways or to complement a mailbox. Plant near the back of a mixed bed since this grass has some height. This grass grows as a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 8.
Porcupine Grass Care
Soil should be rich and moist while still promoting drainage. New plants need consistent and deep watering, but established plants are drought-tolerant. Plant in full sun for best results.
Apply a balanced fertilizer during the spring. Trim the foliage back to 3 inches in the late fall or early spring to encourage new growth once the temperatures warm up.
Porcupine Grass Spacing
This large, upright plant will reach 6 to 7 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide. Plant Porcupine Grass 2 to 3 feet apart when creating a mixed bed or border.
