Prairie Sedge Grass or Carex bicknellii is a versatile and low-maintenance perennial that introduces color and texture. The narrow foliage stands tall, giving this mounded, clump-forming plant a full form. Thin stems stand side-by-side with grassy foliage and feature green flower clusters on the terminal end. The flowers bloom in spring and transition to copper-hued seed pods by fall.

This grass is drought tolerant once established but also makes an excellent addition to a rain garden, allowing for flexible placement options. The height makes this grass well suited to the back of a mixed bed, but it is also an excellent fit for any area needing height and texture. The foliage is deer resistant, providing dependable greenery, and songbirds feed on the seeds during the fall. Grow Prairie Sedge Grass in zones 3 through 7.

Prairie Sedge Grass Care

Plant this ornamental grass in full to partial sun. New plants need regular water, but established plants only need water during an extended dry spell. Prairie Sedge Grass accepts most soil types, but rich, well-drained soil with medium moisture is best. This ornamental grass is not a heavy feeder, but an annual application of slow-release fertilizer each spring will ensure a full and healthy growing season.

Prairie Sedge Grass is easy to maintain; remove dead or damaged growth throughout the growing season. Remove spent foliage in late winter before new growth emerges.

Prairie Sedge Grass Spacing

Prairie Sedge Grass stands 18 to 36 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. Space plants 1 to 2 feet apart to create natural drifts or allow more space so each plant can slowly spread and fill in the empty areas.
