Growing Zones
For an ornamental grass that delivers both summer and fall color, you’ll be hard-pressed to beat this Prairie Sky Switch Grass. Also known as Panicum virgatum Prairie Sky, this tall switch grass develops stunning blue foliage and delicate flower heads, before fading to golden brown. As an upright growing grass, it really does reach for the sky.
The Prairie Sky Switch Grass is perfect for adding some texture and movement wherever you choose to grow it. Being deer resistant it is well suited to rural landscapes and is tolerant of drought-like conditions once established. A native of the Great Plains, ‘Prairie Sky’ is considered hardy from zone 4 to 9 and a low-maintenance perennial. A great soil stabilizer, it can help prevent soil erosion and looks magnificent when planted as a group.
Prairie Sky Switch Grass Care
To thrive, Prairie Sky Switch Grass likes to be grown in full sun and in moist, but free-draining soil. It can cope with any soil pH and rarely needs fertilizing unless the soil is very low in nutrients. Although it can handle some dry conditions, it likes moisture and should be watered regularly for at least the first season after planting.
This Prairie Sky Switch Grass really is low maintenance and only requires pruning to ground level in late winter. Staking is not necessary unless it is grown in overly rich soil.
Prairie Sky Switch Grass Spacing
With its upright habit, the Prairie Sky Switch Grass can grow to 4 to 6 feet high and 2 to 3 feet wide. A plant spacing of 2 to 3 feet should be followed when planting out as a group.
