Prima Belarina® Spring Sun Primrose (Primula vulgaris ‘Kerbelsun’) delivers bold, fully double yellow flowers that measure an impressive 2–2½ inches across. The blooms are densely packed and richly layered, forming a bright dome of color in early to mid-spring. At just 5–8 inches tall and 10–12 inches wide, it stays compact and rounded, making it easy to place at the front of shaded beds or in decorative containers. We like using this variety near entryways where its saturated color and fragrance can be appreciated up close at the start of the season.
Part of the Prima Belarina® series, this perennial was bred for bigger flowers and extended performance in the landscape. The lightly fragrant blooms attract early bees and rise above textured green foliage that remains tidy after flowering. Plants are hardy in USDA zones 4–8 and return reliably when grown in cool, moist conditions. Its small stature makes it ideal for edging woodland borders, underplanting deciduous shrubs, or filling spring patio containers. It also suits cottage-style gardens and rain garden edges where soil stays evenly damp.
Prima Belarina® Spring Sun Primrose Care
Plant in part shade to full shade, especially in regions with warm springs. Morning sun with afternoon shade encourages strong bloom without stressing the foliage. Soil should be humus-rich, moisture-retentive, and well drained, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Keep soil consistently moist during active growth, as primroses have shallow roots that do not tolerate drying out. In hot climates, plants may slow down or go dormant if soil becomes dry. Work compost into the planting area and apply a light balanced fertilizer in early spring if needed.
Remove spent flower stems to maintain a neat appearance. Clumps can be divided every two to three years after bloom or in early fall. In colder zones, apply a light mulch after the ground freezes to reduce frost heaving and protect crowns through late winter.
Prima Belarina® Spring Sun Primrose Spacing
Space plants 10–12 inches apart in borders to allow each mound to fill in fully. For container displays, choose a pot at least 12 inches wide with good drainage and a moisture-retentive planting mix. Combine with Japanese forest grass for contrast in texture, foamflower for layered spring bloom, or a tall hardy fern for height in shaded settings. Select companions that prefer consistent moisture and filtered light to maintain balanced growth in mixed plantings.
