Proud Berry® Pearl Snowberry (Symphoricarpos x ‘TW2’) is a compact deciduous shrub grown for its striking display of large, pearl-white berries in late summer and fall. Soft blue-green foliage sets the stage through the growing season, followed by clusters of small pink flowers in summer that give way to heavy fruit set. At just 2 to 3 feet tall and about 2 feet wide, it fits neatly at the front of borders or along walkways. Compared to older snowberry types, this selection produces larger, cleaner berries on a tighter plant with a more uniform habit.
Derived from North American native species, snowberry is known for adaptability and durability. Proud Berry® Pearl tolerates urban soils, light drought once established, and deer browsing. The rounded habit works well in mass plantings, low hedges, foundation beds, and cutting gardens, where the fruiting stems can be harvested for arrangements. It also performs in large containers for a cold-hardy fall accent. Pollinators visit the summer flowers, and the long-lasting berries may be visited by birds in late fall and winter.
Proud Berry® Pearl Snowberry Care
Plant in full sun for the heaviest fruit set, though it also grows in part sun with slightly reduced berry production. This shrub adapts to most well-drained soils and performs best in average garden soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH, roughly 6.0 to 7.5. Avoid persistently wet sites. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish roots, then provide supplemental irrigation during prolonged dry periods. Fertilizer is rarely required, but a light application of a balanced granular fertilizer in early spring can encourage steady growth in poor soils.
Because it blooms and fruits on new wood, prune in late winter or very early spring before growth begins. Cut the entire plant back by about half each year to encourage vigorous new stems and strong berry production. Every few years, thin out the oldest, thickest stems at ground level to rejuvenate the plant. Deadheading is not necessary, as flowers are followed by fruit.
Proud Berry® Pearl Snowberry Spacing
Space plants about 24 inches apart on center when creating a low hedge or mass planting. For mixed borders, allow 2 to 3 feet between shrubs so the rounded form can develop fully. In containers, use a pot at least 16 to 20 inches wide with good drainage. Pair Proud Berry® Pearl with compact ornamental grasses like little bluestem or fountain grass and late-season perennials such as asters or sedum to echo the fall display and provide textural contrast.
