Feature
Dracaena are very low maintenance, but these plants still command attention thanks to their tree-like good looks and thin, spiky foliage. Also known as Red Margined and Madagascar Dragon tree, this plant adds greenery and texture to a space. The narrow width but tall height can dress up a table or feature in a plant stand to anchor a corner.
Best Locations For Growing Red Margined Dracaena
The Red Margined Dracaena is a lovely houseplant that needs lots of indirect sunlight and increased humidity. It is a sizable plant, so tuck it into the corner of a bathroom or place it in an area with extra moisture in the air.
Red Margined Dracaena Sunlight Requirements
Dracaena likes lots of sunlight, but it must be indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves and cause them to dry out. Not enough light, and the leaves may turn yellow and die. Near a sunny window is a good location for this plant. Periodically rotate the pot so that each side can catch some rays.
Red Margined Dracaena Care
Repot Red Margined Dracaena every couple of years when the roots fill up the existing pot. Gently remove the plant from the pot to check the roots, and when the roots take up the entire pot, it is time to repot. Dracaena do not like to be root bound, so select a new pot that is 1-2 inches larger.
Watering Red Margined Dracaena
Red Margined Dracaena need water when the top several inches of soil are dry to the touch. Let the plant dry out, but drench the soil when it’s time to water. Dracaenas like a deep drink, but they do not like standing water, so remove any excess water. Increased humidity will keep the leaves green and healthy. Find a humid area or use a pebble tray with water to increase the moisture in the air.
Feeding Red Margined Dracaena
Feed the Red Margined Dracaena once a year at the start of the growing season. Use a balanced, slow-release plant food to jump-start new growth. Feeding this plant during the fall and winter isn't necessary if it is not actively growing.
