With its long-lasting pink flower spikes, Rose Marvel Meadow Sage is a real show-stopper. As a Salvia nemorosa, 'Rose Marvel' is a low-maintenance perennial that blooms from early summer until the fall. It develops a compact mound of aromatic, green foliage upon which the flower spikes tower above. Rose Marvel Meadow Sage is loved by pollinators and is drought tolerant and deer resistant.
Growing to around one foot high, this salvia is ideal for growing in a container or for planting as a group at the front of an herbaceous border. Requiring little water, this perennial is easy to care for and even thrives on a bit of neglect. Originally native to Europe and Asia, Rose Marvel is part of the ‘Marvel’ series and was bred for its large flowers. The Rose Marvel Meadow Sage is a great choice for adding long-season color to the garden or using as a cut flower.
Rose Marvel Meadow Sage Care
This dependable and showy salvia performs best when it is grown in full sun. Although tolerant of most soil types, it prefers to be grown in sandy soil with good drainage. Even though this perennial is considered drought tolerant when established, it will need watering regularly for the first season at least. As a light feeder, the Rose Marvel Meadow Sage does not need any extra fertilization. Nevertheless, it can be given a slow-release, general fertilizer sparingly in spring to give it a boost.
To encourage its pink blooms to reappear, any spent flowers should be deadheaded throughout the summer. Once the foliage has died back after the first frost, its stems can be pruned back to 3 inches high and removed. For extra winter protection, any container-grown plants can be moved under cover to ride out the worst of the weather.
Rose Marvel Meadow Sage Spacing
When fully established, Rose Marvel Meadow Sage can reach a size of 10 to 12 inches tall and wide. When planted out in groups for the greatest effect, a spacing of 12 to 14 inches between plants is recommended.
