The Roseopicta Silvia Calathea is a lovely plant with bold foliage. Like all Prayer Plants, its leaves lift and lower throughout the day, adding to its allure. Also known as the Calathea roseopicta 'Silvia,' this plant is a moderately fast grower with an upright growth habit. Oval foliage comes to a gentle point. The broad leaves first emerge as light green with dark green margins. With time, the light green coloring gradually transitions into a pinkish-red hue. Mature plants reach up to two feet tall.
Best Locations For Growing Roseopicta Silvia Calathea
The Roseopicta Silvia Calathea is a good choice for a sunny, humid spot, but it can adapt to most areas of the home, especially if you use a pebble tray or humidifier. Young plants look charming on a tabletop or mantle, while mature plants will command the room from a plant stand. The Roseopicta Silvia Calathea is non-toxic, making it safe in homes with young children and pets.
Roseopicta Silvia Calathea Sunlight Requirements
Place the Roseopicta Silvia Calathea close to a window that faces east or west or several feet from a south-facing window. Bright, indirect sunlight is necessary for the plant to grow new leaves and maintain its bold variegation. Direct sunlight may damage the foliage.
Roseopicta Silvia Calathea Care
Dry air is a constant threat to Prayer Plants, so your plant may develop dry or damaged leaves at some point. Prune damaged leaves to encourage new growth. Repot your Roseopicta Silvia Calathea into a new container with fresh soil every one to two years. Use a container up to two inches larger when the plant becomes rootbound, or divide a large plant into multiple smaller plants. The Roseopicta Silvia Calathea prefers rich, moist, and well-drained soil.
Watering Roseopicta Silvia Calathea
Give the Roseopicta Silvia Calathea water when the top layer of potting soil is dry. Prayer Plants have high water requirements and like damp soil, but too much water can be damaging. Calatheas are sensitive to tap water with elevated fluoride levels, so use filtered or distilled water if brown spots form on the leaves.
Above-average humidity is necessary to keep the leaves vibrant and healthy. The Roseopicta Silvia Calathea will struggle in average to low humidity levels. Group plants together to increase moisture in the air, or use a humidifier or pebble tray to ensure the plant thrives.
Feeding Roseopicta Silvia Calathea
Feed the Roseopicta Silvia Calathea with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Routine applications of plant food encourage new growth. A formula with a balanced NPK ratio, like 20-20-20, is best for Prayer Plants. Fertilize your Roseopicta Silvia Calathea monthly during the spring and summer.
