Hens and Chicks is a well-loved plant partly because it provides unique color and texture but also because it is possibly the easiest plant to maintain. The Ruby Heart Hens and Chicks really thrives when it is left alone. This hardy succulent has fleshy foliage in a deep red near the center that transitions to light green at the pointed tips. The foliage is a big part of the appeal of this plant, but this beauty also blooms. Enjoy clusters of pinkish-purple flowers at the height of summer.

The Ruby Heart Hens and Chicks is a perennial in USDA growing zones 4 through 8. Use this plant in borders, containers, or as ground cover. The color and texture provide visual interest in a rock garden or mixed perennial bed. Due to the low height, place the Ruby Heart Hens and Chicks near the front of a bed to see and admire these succulents. This plant grows in a rosette formation and will send out offshoots that will develop into new plants.

Ruby Heart Hens and Chicks Care

As a succulent, Ruby Heart Hens and Chicks need dry conditions, and this plant prefers sandy, rocky soil. Plant in an area that receives full sun and water once a week as needed. Sempervivum‌ is drought-tolerant, so don’t be in a rush to water. The plant has a quick life cycle and will typically die back shortly after it blooms, at which time the nearby offshoots will then take over. Plants that start to show signs of dying can be removed to create more space for the other plants.

This perennial will die back in areas that receive harsh winter weather, but it will grow back in the spring. The plant can be brought indoors to overwinter and grown as a houseplant or stored in a protected area. Ruby Heart Hens and Chicks is not a heavy feeder, and this plant does not require fertilization.

Ruby Heart Hens and Chicks Spacing

The Ruby Heart Hens and Chicks is a compact plant that will reach 4 to 6 inches tall and spread 8 to 10 inches. This plant naturally sends out pups or offshoots that will set roots close to the mother plant. Plants can be moved if they appear too cramped, although more space will become available as older plants die back.
