For a shrub with year-round color, the Rubykins Korean Willow is definitely worth considering. Also known as Salix koriyanagi 'Rubykins', this willow can grow to 6 feet high and is ideal for adding height and structure. It produces slender green-blue foliage, which turns a lovely golden yellow in the fall. Furthermore, red catkins develop in early spring, which are perfect for displaying in a vase. Traditionally, this willow was grown for weaving.
This slow-growing deciduous willow is resistant to deer, which makes it perfect for any rural landscape. It develops tall upright stems and can spread laterally over time. Native to Korea, Rubykins Korean Willow is widely known in parts of Asia, and is hardy in zones 5 to 8 of the US. With its preference for moisture, Rubykins Korean Willow thrives in rain gardens or other moist substrates.
Rubykins Korean Willow Care
The Rubykins Korean Willow likes to grow in either full or partial sun and requires consistently moist, well-drained soil. When grown in fertile soil, supplemental fertilization is generally not needed. However, you can apply a general fertilizer in early spring to encourage plant growth.
Like other willows, you can coppice ‘Rubykins’ every 1 to 3 years, cutting it back to about 6 inches above the ground. If not regularly coppiced it may grow in excess of six feet tall.
Rubykins Korean Willow Spacing
The Rubykins Korean Willow is often grown en masse for its color or to help prevent soil erosion. Growing to an eventual 4 to 6 feet high and wide, Rubykins should be spaced about 4 to 6 feet apart when planted as a group.
