Willows, also known as Salix spp, are a diverse group of graceful deciduous trees and shrubs in an array of sizes. Many willows are water lovers and can be used for erosion control along stream beds. They also serve as host plants for many pollinators and play a critical role in the North American ecosystem. The fuzzy flowers are called catkins and are showier on male plants. Some willow trees can spread and overwhelm a site, but several cultivars grow slowly and are well-behaved, making them perfect for growing in containers and small gardens.
