Silver Lace Fern is a decorative perennial with elegant evergreen foliage, and goes by several names including Pteris ensiformis 'Silver Lace', Pteris ensiformis 'Evergemiensis', Sword Brake Fern, and Slender Brake Fern. This humidity-tolerant houseplant, originating from the Pacific and Asia, has exquisite parakeet-green fronds etched with tinges of silver and cream. Superb as a hanging plant, Silver Lace Fern’s broad shape and marked foliage will easily draw eyes from coworkers, friends, and relatives as they observe from below. Thriving in warm temperatures and high humidity, this striking plant is much easier to maintain than other ferns and is a great option for newbie gardeners wanting to add a new cultivar to their plant collection.
Best Locations For Growing Silver Lace Fern
Silver Lace Fern does very well in rooms with medium light and average temperatures of 60° - 75°. These delicate perennials also crave high humidity, 60-90%. A bathroom or kitchen is likely the perfect spot to display this striking evergreen. Just make sure, though, that it is safe from the paws of little Milo or Max, because this fern, although charming, is toxic to pets.
Silver Lace Fern Sunlight Requirements
Silver Lace Fern does well in medium indirect light and partial shade to full shade. As a result, this variegated perennial should not receive any more than four hours of direct light per day. Rooms with east-facing windows will prove ideal.
Silver Lace Fern Care
Silver Lace Fern does quite well planted in acidic, well-draining soil. A 5-inch pot filled with a typical houseplant potting soil mixed with peat moss and perlite/coconut coir will provide a good starter home for this evergreen. Trim dead fronds to promote growth and sculpt a tidy form. This perennial needs to be repotted every spring. Additionally, Silver Lace Fern can be propagated by division or spores.
Watering Silver Lace Fern
Silver Lace Fern may need to be watered 2 to 3 times weekly, however, doing a moisture check prior to watering will help prevent overwatering and subsequent root rot. Insert your finger one to two inches below the surface of the soil and water if it feels dry. If not? Then wait a few days to check the soil again.
Feeding Silver Lace Fern
From the beginning of spring to early fall, feed Silver Lace Fern a balanced water-soluble fertilizer, diluted 50% of the manufacturer’s recommended strength, once per month. Refrain from fertilizing, however, during the winter when this plant is not growing.
