Silver Satin is a slower-growing variety of Pothos that has a distinct, silvery-metallic sheen to its markings. This easy-to-grow vine is native to Thailand and the Philippines, where it grows as an understory plant and climbs evergreens. Also known as Scindapsus pictus, this Pothos can reach lengths of 10 feet or more in its native habitat but will stay a more manageable 3 feet when grown as a houseplant.
Best Locations For Growing Silver Satin Pothos
Pothos look best when they have room to spread out and ramble. Try growing Silver Satin in a hanging basket or in a pot on top of a bookcase or shelf. Climbing supports like moss poles or a simple trellis can also be used for an eye-catching vertical display. All parts of Pothos are toxic and should be kept away from pets and children.
Silver Satin Pothos Sunlight Requirements
Bright indirect light in a room with southern exposure is perfect for keeping the color and markings of this plant vibrant. East and west windows will also provide enough bright light (4 hours or more) in the morning or afternoon. Pothos will adapt to lower light levels, but Silver Satin will lose most of its unique metallic coloring without bright light.
Silver Satin Pothos Care
Pothos prefers consistent temperatures year-round, around 65-80 degrees F. Keep these vines away from drafty front entrances and windows, and out of the path of air conditioning and heating vents. The potting soil should be free draining, loose, and nutritious. Mixing 1 part fine Orchid bark with two parts all-purpose potting mix meets these criteria wonderfully.
Watering Silver Satin Pothos
Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry to the touch. In the summer, this could be up to 2 times a week. Watering needs to be cut back when the plant slows down in the winter. Watering once every 10-14 days in winter will allow the soil to dry and keep Pothos from being overwatered.
The humidity levels need to remain consistent from season to season. Anywhere from 40-60% humidity will keep Silver Satin Pothos from dropping leaves.
Feeding Silver Satin Pothos
Silver Satin requires fertilizing in the spring and summer, when it is growing the fastest. Use a diluted liquid fertilizer formulated for houseplants. Once a month, apply a feed in place of watering. Look for a formula with an NPK ratio of 1-1-1 that supports growth of foliage and roots.
