The botanically named Philodendron hastatum is more widely known as the Silver Sword Philodendron or quite simply, the Silver Sword plant. With its large and tapering green-to-gray leaves that can grow to 12 inches in length with age, this houseplant really does stand out. Its stout stems can be allowed to trail or be trained vertically up a support, such as a moss pole, and reach more than 6 feet tall. The Silver Sword Philodendron is perfect for adding a bit of a tropical jungle vibe to any room.

Best Locations For Growing Silver Sword Philodendron

The Silver Sword Philodendron is an impressive plant that can be grown in any room with the right care. However, being toxic to humans and animals, care should be taken if growing it around children or pets.

Silver Sword Philodendron Sunlight Requirements

This philodendron prefers to be placed in bright, indirect light. It is advisable to avoid growing the Silver Sword Philodendron in direct sunlight as it can burn and damage its lush foliage.

Silver Sword Philodendron Care

Whether grown as a trailing or climbing plant, the Silver Sword Philodendron likes to be kept warm at a temperature between 65°F - 80°F and away from any cold drafts. Preferring high humidity levels, this plant may benefit from being grown in a bathroom or kitchen, or it can be regularly misted if situated in a drier environment. Dying, or misplaced foliage can be removed by cutting just above a leaf node with sanitized scissors.

Watering Silver Sword Philodendron

The Silver Sword Philodendron thrives when it is grown in a moist, but well-drained soil. In average conditions during the growing season, a weekly watering may be sufficient, although in winter, watering can be reduced as its growth slows. Wait until the top two inches of soil are dry before watering your Silver Sword Philodendron, as this will help prevent the soil from becoming overly wet.

Feeding Silver Sword Philodendron

During the growing season from spring until the fall, feed the Silver Sword Philodendron every four weeks to help maintain and encourage its lush growth. A balanced and liquid form houseplant fertilizer can be used as per its instructions. As tempting as it may be, do not over-fertilize this plant, which can burn the roots.

    He’s a cutie!

Posted by Maggee McCarney on Jan 21, 2023

I think I already reviewed this guy, he was 1/2 dead from the cold, somewhere along the trip here. So I am watching him closely. He’ll loose a couple more leaves I see but I don’t know if he’ll make it or not. I’d like a replacement if he doesn’t. I think I ordered a much larger one than this. A 4” or 6” pot is what I paid for. He’s only 8” tall.
