Salvia x sylvestris Snow Hill ('Schneehugel'), commonly known as Snow Hill Wood Sage, is a uniquely white-blooming variety of salvia. It sends up spikes of pure white tubular flowers in late spring to early summer. However, the show doesn’t stop there, as this salvia can sporadically rebloom throughout the rest of the summer. This mint family member has aromatic, fuzzy, gray-green leaves that are attractive in their own right.

This perennial has an erect, branched form that grows as a compact clump about 1 foot wide. The flowers draw pollinators, especially butterflies, most of the summer. This plant is drought and heat resistant, and not typically bothered by deer or rabbits. Plant it in drifts to brighten a cottage garden or use it to enhance a butterfly habitat.

Snow Hill Wood Sage Care

Snow Hill prefers full sun with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It grows best in evenly moist soil that drains well, but it can handle periods of drought once established. It prefers climates with cool nights and low humidity. Water it regularly during the summer months, and mulch with organic compost around the root zone to conserve moisture.

Remove spent flowers to encourage a second bloom and cut the plant back after flowering.

Snow Hill Wood Sage Spacing

For planting in groups, space individual plants approximately 15 inches apart on center, in staggered rows. For container planting, select a weather-resistant pot at least 12 inches in diameter with drainage holes.
