Want to bring some color and life to a plain bookshelf or empty wall? String of Hearts makes a superb shelf climber or hanging plant. This fast-growing evergreen vine possesses delicate foliage fashioned like miniature hearts. The top sides of this hardy succulent’s attractive leaves are dappled with a mélange of silver and forest green, while the under sides are painted in hues of either rose or jade. Adding even more visual interest during the summer, this perennial pushes to the max by producing gorgeous multicolored blooms in fuchsia, ivory, and plum. A great option for any newbie gardener, String of Hearts, will reliably provide you with color and charm all-year round.

Best Locations For Growing String of Hearts

Want your String of Hearts to grow? Choose a room that has bright indirect light; temperatures varying between 60°F to 80°F; and humidity levels ranging between 40% to 50%. Any room that has all of these conditions plus space to climb or trail will prove ideal. You don’t need to fret about little hands or paws because this lovely house plant is nontoxic to people and pets.

String of Hearts Sunlight Requirements

String of Hearts prefers bright indirect light. South-facing, west-facing, and east-facing windows provide adequate amounts of brightness; however, during any periods of direct light, it is wise to place this lovely house plant a few feet away from any windows to avoid sunburn.

String of Hearts Care

String of Hearts loves loamy, acidic to neutral, and well-draining soil. Amend a good house plant potting soil with some peat moss and perlite/coco coir to keep this lovely house plant smiling. While String of Hearts does not require a lot of fuss, dead leaves should be trimmed in order to promote growth and prevent disease. Additionally, if you would like shorter stems, you can trim back the vines to the lengths you prefer. String of Hearts does not need frequent repotting; usually only once every couple of years is fine, preferably at the beginning of the growing season during spring. Just transplant this plant into a vessel that is one to two inches bigger than the old pot. And want more vines? You can propagate this plant fairly easily by using seeds, stem cuttings, or tubers.

Watering String of Hearts

String of Hearts is a drought-tolerant evergreen that is susceptible to overwatering and underwatering. Check the moisture level of the soil prior to watering. Simply insert your finger 1 to 2 inches into the soil, and water if it feels dry.

Feeding String of Hearts

Feed your String of Hearts a balanced fertilizer at half-strength once a month except during this plant’s dormant period, in the autumn and winter months. Watch, however, for leaves that are turning brown. This may be an indication of over-fertilizing. Using a low-nitrogen fertilizer during the flowering season will help grow bigger and brighter blooms.
