Sunny™ Rose Sensation Black-eyed Susan Vine (Thunbergia alata 'VOLTHU 7898') brings a soft rose-pink display from late spring into autumn on graceful climbing stems. Each trumpet-shaped flower features a dark eye at its center, creating a dramatic contrast against lush green foliage. The continuous color show draws the interest of hummingbirds and butterflies, making it a must-have for those who love pollinator-friendly gardens. With lengths of up to eight feet, we have found that this vigorous vine quickly covers fences or trellises, adding vertical impact to small spaces.
Its low-maintenance nature suits both beginners and avid gardeners. Native to tropical Africa, this annual thrives in sunny conditions and tolerates summer heat, Sunny™ Rose Sensation is delightful in containers, hanging baskets, and even mass plantings where a pink tone is welcome. The flowers drop naturally after fading, so there’s no need for constant cleanup. Many use Black-eyed Susan Vine for screening on patios or as a focal accent in combination arrangements, thanks to its long bloom period and easy growth habit.
Sunny™ Rose Sensation Black-eyed Susan Vine Care
Set plants out once temperatures remain above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, offering them a nutrient-rich, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Provide full sun or at least six hours of direct light each day for optimal performance, though partial shade can prevent scorching in hotter regions. Water regularly to maintain moderate moisture, and apply a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer weekly to support steady growth. If your soil lacks organic matter, blend in compost before planting to encourage healthy root development.
Pinch back any overly long stems early in the season for a bushier habit and abundant blooms. Clip away declining foliage or spent stems at season’s end to tidy up plants. Container-grown vines may require a more frequent watering schedule and a trellis or support if you want them to climb. Most gardeners treat this vine as an annual, but you can bring the pot indoors to a sunny spot to overwinter it.
Sunny™ Rose Sensation Black-eyed Susan Vine Spacing
Allow around 16 to 24 inches between individual plants when growing in rows or mass plantings. If you opt for container culture, choose a pot at least 12 inches wide so the root system has plenty of room to develop.
