Sweetheart Hoya or Hoya kerrii is a lovely, heart-shaped houseplant commonly sought after for Valentine’s Day. Sweetheart Hoya is also known as Valentine Plant and Sweetheart Wax Plant. Sweetheart Hoya is in the Apocynaceae family, related to milkweed, and develops white flowers with burgundy centers and sticky nectar.
Best Locations For Growing Sweetheart Hoya
Sweetheart Hoya is a small and tidy houseplant that will be happy in any bright spot in the home or office. Avoid placing it in a location with cold or hot drafty air and keep it away from radiators. Sweetheart Hoya is nontoxic for pets or humans.
Sweetheart Hoya Sunlight Requirements
Sweetheart Hoya prefers bright indirect sunlight but will survive in lower light conditions. This plant does not tolerate full or direct sun. Place it in a south- or west-facing window.
Sweetheart Hoya Care
Sweetheart Hoya can be particular about its growing conditions. It requires well-drained soil and performs best in a cactus soil mixed with a bit of orchid mix; select a pot with a drainage hole. Do not repot when flowering; Sweetheart Hoya likes to be pot bound and does not need repotting regularly. Do not trim or prune off the bare vines if you want Sweetheart Hoya to flower. Bright light encourages flowering. Sweetheart Hoya prefers warmer temperatures from 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Watering Sweetheart Hoya
Sweetheart Hoya is drought tolerant with low water needs. Water Sweetheart Hoya thoroughly once or twice a month, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Sweetheart Hoya has moderate humidity needs and typically does not need additional humidity in the home.
Feeding Sweetheart Hoya
Sweetheart Hoya is a light feeder and can be fed with a balanced, gentle houseplant fertilizer one time a month. Do not apply fertilizer in the winter while the plant is dormant.
