Native to southern coastal regions of Africa, Crassula ovata ‘Variegata’, or Variegated Jade plant is a beautiful succulent shrub with wide oval, thick, green and creamy-white, glossy leaves, often tipped with red. They can produce small, pink-white, star-shaped flowers during late fall and early winter due to seasonal temperature changes.
Best Locations For Growing Variegated Jade Plant
Place this Jade plant close to a window that gets 4 hours of bright filtered light each day, but keep the leaves from touching the glass because it can act as a magnifier and cause sunburn. Variegated Jade plants enjoy daytime temperatures between 75 - 80 degrees F and evening temperatures above 50 degrees F.
Variegated Jade Plant Sunlight Requirements
Provide bright indirect light; try placing this beauty in a west- or east-facing window for best performance.
Variegated Jade Plant Care
Plant Variegated Jade Plant in well-draining succulent soil mixed with plenty of sand, coconut coir, and perlite. This combination is well draining but also compact enough to keep the shallow roots in place because this plant can become top-heavy once mature. A good soil pH is around 6.3. Jade plants tend to become pot-bound so you can select a pot a couple of inches larger than the previous pot, and repot every few years during spring. This succulent is easily propagated by stem or leaf cuttings.
Watering Variegated Jade Plant
Variegated Jade plants have shallow root systems and store extra water in their leaves. They are sensitive to overwatering, so allow the first couple of inches of soil to dry out in between waterings. If you see the succulent leaves begin to wither or shrivel, it's a sign your plant needs more water. Water less frequently during the dormant winter season.
Feeding Variegated Jade Plant
Use a liquid fertilizer such as 5-10-5 NPK, diluted to 1/2 the manufacturer’s recommended strength, once every 2 months during spring and summer; refrain from fertilizing during winter months when this plant naturally goes dormant. Too much fertilizer can damage the roots.
