Feature
Commonly known as the Victoria Bird's Nest Fern, the Asplenium antiquum 'Victoria' is a pet-safe fern that is grown for its stunning foliage. Producing bright-green, glossy, spear-shaped fronds with wavy edges, this Asplenium will add color and interest wherever it is grown. Smaller than similar Bird's Nest Fern, Victoria remains relatively compact when grown indoors, reaching an eventual two feet high.
Best Locations For Growing Victoria Bird's Nest Fern
This fern prefers to be grown in a warm room with high humidity levels: a bathroom or kitchen is perfect. Being non-toxic it can be grown safely around pets and children.
Victoria Bird's Nest Fern Sunlight Requirements
Victoria Bird's Nest Fern can tolerate various lighting levels from partial shade to well-lit rooms. However, it is inadvisable to expose this plant to direct sunlight, which can burn its delicate foliage. Placement near a north- or east-facing window is ideal.
Victoria Bird's Nest Fern Care
For the Victoria Bird's Nest Fern to look its best, grow it in a humid environment such as a bathroom or conservatory. Alternatively, it can be placed on a wet pebble tray that will raise the surrounding humidity levels. A temperature range of 65-75 ºF suits this fern best; just avoid exposing it to anything below 55 ºF or cold air conditioning, as it may not recover. Pruning is rarely required, although any disheveled-looking fronds can be removed at the base of the plant with a sharp and sanitized tool.
Watering Victoria Bird's Nest Fern
The Victoria Bird's Nest Fern grows best in moist soil that is not overly soggy or wet, which can lead to the roots rotting. Watering is not required until the top layer of soil has begun to dry out, and any excess water should be allowed to drain from the soil before placing the plant back in a decorative container.
Feeding Victoria Bird's Nest Fern
To keep this fern healthy and its foliage lush, a half-strength balanced houseplant fertilizer can be applied every month to the soil from spring until the fall. When growth slows during the winter months, there is no need to fertilize.
