The White Velvet Tradescantia is botanically known as the Tradescantia sillamontana, but often goes by the names of Cobweb Spiderwort, Gossamer Plant or just White Velvet. A low-maintenance plant that is easy to care for and can be grown indoors or outdoors. The White Velvet Tradescantia is aptly named due to its oval foliage being covered in little white hairs, giving it a hairy appearance. Furthermore, it can even produce little pink to purple flowers in summer.
Best Locations For Growing White Velvet Tradescantia
The White Velvet Tradescantia can be grown indoors or outdoors as long as its basic growing requirements are met. That being said, it is considered a toxic plant and should be grown away from children or pets.
White Velvet Tradescantia Sunlight Requirements
When grown inside, White Velvet grows best when it receives bright indirect light. Near a windowsill tends to suit this plant well, but far enough away that it is not receiving strong midday sun.
White Velvet Tradescantia Care
The White Velvet Tradescantia is a low-maintenance plant that does not need much attention other than watering. Best grown at 60 to 80 °F, this plant can be moved outdoors during the summer months, but will need to be brought back inside when the temperatures begin to fall below 50° F, which can damage the plant. Preferring humid conditions, it will be happiest indoors when misted regularly or placed upon a tray of wet gravel or stones. To help encourage bushy rather than leggy growth, the growing tips can be pinched out regularly.
Watering White Velvet Tradescantia
This plant requires more water when it is actively growing than during the winter months. The White Velvet Tradescantia is sensitive to being overwatered and hates to have its roots sitting in waterlogged soil. For this reason, watering is only required once the soil has begun to dry out. It is important to allow the soil to drain free after watering, and the pot must have adequate drainage holes.
Feeding White Velvet Tradescantia
Feeding the White Velvet Tradescantia is not strictly required. However, to give it a boost, an application of a liquid houseplant fertilizer can be given at half the recommended strength in the spring.
