The Willow Oak Tree, or Quercus phellos as it is also known, is a fast-growing, medium-to-large tree that is loved by wildlife. Growing to around 40 to 75 feet tall, it produces a rounded crown, green narrow foliage, and yellow-green catkins in spring. Willow Oak is an adaptable and easy-to-grow tree.
The large rounded crown of the Willow Oak Tree makes it an ideal specimen for providing shade. The Willow Oak is a native deciduous tree and winter hardy in zones 5 to 9. Often used commercially for large spaces, Willow Oak is also well suited to large gardens. Both birds and mammals favor this tree for its food and habitat.
Willow Oak Tree Care
The Willow Oak Tree grows best in full sun. It prefers a neutral to acidic soil that is moist but free draining. To support its vigorous growth, young specimens will benefit from an application of a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Water frequently to help the tree establish in the first two growing seasons. Mature trees can tolerate some dry spells. As a potentially tall tree, care should be taken when selecting a planting site to avoid any structural or overhead issues down the line.
Maintaining a central leader from planting onward will help encourage a strong structure. Prune during winter when the tree is dormant, and remove lower branches that compete with the leader.
Willow Oak Tree Spacing
When fully grown, the Willow Oak Tree can reach 40 to 75 feet tall with a crown 25 to 50 feet wide. If planting to form a line, you can space each tree around 40 feet apart to give the crowns room to mature.
