Allegheny leatherleaf viburnum provides deep green foliage, romantic and fragrant white flower clusters during the early summer, and berries that are long-lasting through the fall and winter months. Including this semi-evergreen shrub in a garden design will provide year-round structure and interest while other plants are dormant. Viburnum x rhytidophylloides ‘Allegheny’ is reliably evergreen in warmer climates and is deciduous where temperatures fall below 0 degrees F in the winter.

The dense branches and foliage of viburnum work well to create windbreaks as part of an informal hedge and are indispensable for supporting wildlife in the garden. The nectar-rich flowers attract beneficial pollinators, while the dark-colored berries are favorites of songbirds and non-migratory birds from late summer through the winter. This viburnum is rarely bothered by diseases and pests including deer, which avoid the thick, leathery leaves. Plant Allegheny leatherleaf in a mixed perennial and shrub border or in a foundation planting near the house

Allegheny Leatherleaf Viburnum Care

Viburnums are versatile shrubs and will grow in a wide range of conditions. They prefer acidic to neutral soil with a loose, loamy texture. A location that has good drainage year-round is imperative, as viburnum does not tolerate wet feet. Full sun exposure for at least 6 hours is important for good blooming and deep rich foliage color. Supplemental watering is rarely required after the viburnum is fully established. This is a relatively drought-tolerant plant that only requires annual mulching with organic compost or arborist chips to assist in holding moisture in the soil through the hot summer months.

Light pruning is only required to remove dead branches and shape the shrub. Prune after flowering to keep the shrub to the desired size. No deadheading is needed, as it will prevent berry formation late in the summer. Fertilizing can be done early in the spring before blooming to improve growth. Apply a granular, extended-release product with a balanced ratio of NPK for foliage and flower support. Viburnum thrives in growing zones 5-8 and does not require extra attention during the winter months.

Allegheny Leatherleaf Viburnum Spacing

Allegheny leatherleaf viburnum is a medium shrub, reaching 8 -10 feet tall and wide, making it a good choice for both large or small gardens. Provide plenty of room between plants when using them as a hedge or group. A spacing of 8-9 feet between plant centers will create a dense hedge, while a wider spacing will highlight the natural shape of the shrub.

Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
